It really depends on the cause of the toothaches.
Some toothaches are caused by inner infections of the root nerve, or from a cracked tooth itself, and in that case a dentist is best.
In the meantime avoid artificial sugars, and too much bread and pasta, since these cause the acids in the mouth to unbalance and can increase sensitivity to pain.
Clove oil is really fantastic and you can get this from a lot of health food stores and pharmacies. Clove oil is still used today in some of the amalgates and other products used by dentists, which gives you an idea of well it can work. It is naturally analgesic in the mouth and reduces inflammation. It is however only a temporary fix depending on the problem.
If the problem is due more to sensitive teeth, than base infection or damage to the tooth, consider also getting a toothpaste for sensitive teeth and once more avoiding too much sugar and too many carbs like bread and pasta again.
Toothaches can finally be caused by bruxism, or grinding (which can sometimes crack a tooth, which can be very painful). You can find out if you do this while sleeping because you'll often wake up and your mouth or jaw may feel a bit achey.

Brilliant answer Ravenari!! I didnt know half that stuff! I knew about the Clove oil though, its an antiseptic oil and has properties that will slightly numb the area it is applied to, therefore relieving your pain. I would seek advice though before using any oils.
I grind my teeth in my sleep and my dentist wants me to wear a gum shield thing at night, kind of like the ones rugby players wear, very attractive!!!

You can make a mild tea out of cloves and myrrh and rinse your mouth with it periodically until you get to the dentist. It stops infection and gives relief to the pain and won't hurt you. I put 1/2 teaspoon of myrrh & 1/4 teaspoon clove pwd to a quart that I've add boiling hot water. Then I let it steep until it cools. You can keep this in the fridge for up to a week and just nuke it in the microwave until it is just luke warm. You don't need to use much of it. It works quite well. Never put clove oil directly on your gums as it will burn them and cause you more problems.

The way I deal with toothaches (only temporarily of course - a dentist is the best treatment!) is to chew on gum, then sort-of hold the gum to the tooth that hurts. It's not so attractive if you're at work or school or talking, obviously, and if you use a minty gum it will make it feel worse, but for some reason my friends and I have found that the gum feels sort of like a 'cushion' for the pain.

I'm extremely late in posting this. As Ravenari said, it could be an inner infection of the root nerve. Depending on how bad the infection is, the tooth may need a root canal or it may need to be extracted. The dentist will be able to determine that. He or She may also decide to have you take an anitbiotic for the abcess.
Moving on the cracked tooth. If the crack is small, the dentist may be able to crown the tooth. They take a mold of the tooth, grind it down ( not as bad as it sounds) and makes a temporary crown. You would get the permanent crown a couple weeks later. Depending on the dentist and whether they have a lab at their office, you may get the permanent crown the same day. If the crack is large the tooth may have to be extracted. Bruxing guards do help for those who grind their teeth at night.
I work in a dentist office and the doctors I work with say to take Advil or anything with Ibuprofen in it. Hopefully that will be some help to someone. I'm sorry I don't have any knowledge in the way of herbal to relieve pain.

Of course as others have said, the dentist is the best longterm cure. However I have used a crystal called Howlite in the past for short term pain relief as its properties are especially good for toothache and tooth related pains.
Hope that helps!
All the best.
