I really don't. I'm using the Waite/Smith deck for the tarot beginner course but I find the images stale, like chewing on a dry Saltine cracker. Also, when I've asked a question and pulled a card from my deck I keep getting bad news from it.
I've decided that I'll use the deck for the course but it gives me bad vibes. Any suggestions for a deck that I can use outside of the course that would be more suiting to me? Should we purchase the suggested for instance, Robert Wang's Golden Dawn, Aleister Crowley Thoth or The Golden Dawn Magicial tarot or?

See I personally view the Rider/Waite-Smith deck the exact opposite way! Personally I'd say figure out why you get 'bad' vibes from the deck and why you think you are getting only 'bad' news from it. Does the news resonate? If you are receiving from it what you perceive of it well that just makes sense. If you think its a bad deck and only going to give you such then most likely thats what you'll interpret everything coming from it that way. So I'd get to the root of it all and see what you can gain from it!
You can always choose a deck that you feel resonates with you more but I like a challenge myself hehe. Not uncommon though to have more than one deck!

Thank for your reply. I'll take what you had written into consideration, I want to like the deck, I really do but I'm just having a tough time liking it. I wonder if I continue to work with it perhaps it will grow on me in some way? I think it's the dark lines that outline the images that bother me the most, to me, it seems to make the images constrained and stagnant and not fluid.
Normally, I love antiques and replica's and since this deck was first printed 1910 you would think I'd adore it but I don't but like I said perhaps it will grow on me with time, I'm not sure.
I'll keep working at it, I'm sure it's just me and hopefully I'll get over it in time.

You might try the Legacy of Divine by Ciro M thats a beautiful deck, (all his decks are) or the Oracle of Visions. Shadow Scapes by Paulina is another beautiful deck, just go to Amazon and look at all the decks they have one might jump out at you. ~ Elia

I'm with you, I detest the RW. I choose my decks by touch and honestly, I can't even pick up that deck without shuddering. Troed to force myself to buy it for the course, but couldn't get the cards to the shop counter. Don't know why, cant explain it, but I listen to my gut.
I definatly agree with Michael, that your peceptions of the deck will be colouring your reading. If you managed to get the deck home and wish to persevere with it for the course, some indepth work with them may help. Have you attuned with the cards, carried them with you and/or slept with them. Meditate on them, going deep into the card and work out what it is that really bothers you. If it is certain cards that bother you more than others, perhaps it is the card meaning rather than the deck itself that is the problem. I used to have dreadful issues with the 10 and 7 of swords, would turn to BLAH if they came up in a reading.
If the borders on the cards are the problem, you can try cropping them. I know a number of readers who do that. They say that the borders ruin the continuity of the card.
edited .... Oh wait, sorry, you were talking about the lines around the images, not around the cards. My bad, ignore me.

Don't just work with them like normal and think everything is going to be hunky dory! You gotta figure out what about the deck you don't like it goes deeper then simple lines It's a lot like people. We usually cannot stand people who we mirror. We see in people what irritates us about ourselves or things we NEED to work on and so other people act as mirrors for us.. Same concept for Tarot Decks (cards etc) when you dislike something or just get a negative vibe...

I've been scouring the internet and I think I've found a Rider/Waite that I like, where the dark outlining doesn't seem to bother me as much and the colors are much more alive and vibrant. It's called the Albano/Waite and it looks very similar but more awake or alive if you will.
As soon as I save my pennies I think I will purchase this one.
Micheal: I don't know, the Rider/Waite just seems dull to me, not so much a specific card but the whole thing makes me feel blah, negative. It just seems depressing to me so maybe it's the subdued colors as well.
but I will think it over, perhaps there is more to it that I'm not seeing at the moment.

I really like the Legacy of the Divine out of the two but the other one is gorgeous as well!

I've looked at the Albano/Waite and I like that one much better. The colors appease me so much more, a matter of coloring perhaps? I plan to order that one as soon as I can.

I don't personally use a Rider-Waite deck when it comes to tarot. I use an oracle deck, Magical Menagerie. None of the more traditional decks resonated with me and this one, when I first saw it, jumped out at me and I had to have it. That's pretty much my philosophy when it comes to decks: if it's meant for you, you'll know it.

Thank you for sharing which pack you use, all of the suggestions on this thread have been so nice!

As a side note I just noticed I was an Air Dragon now, wow! that was quick!
Just a bit ago I went to Amazon marketplace and found a new Albano/waite very cheaply so I purchased it! The cards look the same as the Rider/waite (except the coloring) so I don't anticipate much of a transition problem with my studies. Hopefully, I'll get on with this one much better.

This is actually such a good explanation. I think you should simply follow your hunch and get what makes you happy & feels good. In all mantic systems we get the infos from higher levels and move them through our mind. If our mind is affected by how we feel about the tool in negative ways, then the outcome will be colored by that. It's not only with Tarot or decks but with any system we use for this. People who report that exact problem usually love Universal Waite Tarot done by Mary Hanson-Roberts. It's the same as Pamelas, but with vivid, more warm & alive colors. You can see it here. This is just another one to check & i'm very glad that you love the one you use atm. All the best, cheers!
