Okey Dokey then ~ not really sure which board I should post this thread but decided the moot a good place to start,,,,
Frequently advice is given to "follow what best works for you" and I even pass out that same advice quite often myself,,,,however there are some things that just "are" (seems like the best way I know how to explain it),,,,To me East is Air, South is Fire, West is Water and North is Earth because it just "IS" and this brain has a hard time wrapping around something different (my own personal hang-up) ~ My question is do the elements have different correspondences for you and what are they? I'm curious now if and how it could vary,,,,

I don't really think anything just 'IS' because I think a lot of people correspond different things than I would but I can always understand how and why they correspond it in the way they do. I associate the elements as You do  But I can see how some people would shift it depending on location as well as many other factors. For me this is how I work, I associate the elements that way because that is how I feel to work with them, how I was trained and How it will be till Spirit says differently if that ever happens. It's a lot like the Tarot really. I may associate Death with literal Death where another may just see it as a new beginning. Nobody is technically wrong just seeing it through different filters. I have my reasons and experiences that align with my reason for my interpretation just as I can see the other persons reasoning behind theirs and I tend to add their interpretation on to the one I have.

I think my definition of just "IS" are the same as how you summed it in your statements above. I suppose that is one of those things in life that you always take for granted until you really look at it from a different perspective ~ which is why,,,,"My question is do the elements have different correspondences for you and what are they?" I've always associated East with Air; South with Fire; West with Water and North with Earth, too.
However, there is a good argument to change those to East with Earth; South with Fire; West with Water and North with Air. As you know, Earth is feminine, Air is masculine, Fire is masculine and Water is feminine.......so the North-South axis from Earth (feminine) to Fire (masculine) - would make a lot more sense if it was the same gender for both ends/directions - in other words if North was considered as Air which is masculine (from where the cold winter winds blow) and South was still considered as Fire which is masculine then the North/South axis would be masculine which would make the East/West axis as feminine. Got all that, lol!!! It actually makes a lot of sense but I've just never tried working with it that way.
As well, it has been said that the usual North/Earth; East/Air; South/Fire and West/Water was chosen by a group in the southern area of England and all that makes a lot of sense but imagine living on the east coast of North America.......surely with the huge Atlantic Ocean just to the east, then the magical East would have to be Water - don't ya think; and West would be Earth.

@ Briganta, as confusing as it sounds, it actually makes sense!
Since I learned it with the "standard/usual" (for lack of better word/definition) correspondence of direction-element it would be confusing for me to change even when the feminine-masculine would actually change the correspondences. Trying to train the brain to absorb what it has floating in it now is a huge chore in itself

I have East as water because I can see the Hudson River from my house and the Atlantic is past that river. In fact, I've flip flopped all the directions but I need to look more into the masculine and feminine bit.

To me the old adage that you originally brought up "what feels right to you" still very much applies here as it would anything else. I live on a lake and it is South of my house. So when I am on my dock or in my backyard preforming a ritual it feels almost disrespectful to me to put fire in that direction. Granted I have never felt like that until I moved here. So I would say the way you correspond the elements and their direction is totally up to the practitioner.
