I was thinking about the meaning of traditions today and what makes them important. For instance some people might follow a tradition just because that's how it's always been done forever. Others might follow it out of respect for someone. Others might take part in creating a new tradition because they found something exceedingly effective.
As a solitary practitioner, I started out many of my practices without the guidance and information that I have now. Most of my own practices, particularly meditation are my tradition now. If I ever teach or give advice on meditation, I would draw from my own traditions. I do experiment and have changed my rituals somewhat using information that I have learned and if it works for me, I'm open to making it a part of my tradition.
Certain traditions, for instance holidays with family, gifts, decor, menu items etc... I love them because perhaps, my Grandmother did it that way or my Aunt does something else that is special. So, in relation to my practice, I might do something that someone I cared for and respected does and make it a tradition. On the other hand, if there is a new way, a way that works better, then I would certainly want to make use of it.
In business, as a manager of people, I never want my employees to do things blindly, 'just because it's always been done that way'. I want my people to know why they are doing things a certain way and to always be looking for a better way. If it works, don't fix it, but be open to improvement.

I agree completely, Its how I started as well, I incorporate what I have learned and use what I feel works best for me. A lot of my practice is based on the old time practices, and some are what I have learned here and from books.

Ditto on this one ~ To me tradition is what you have had passed down to you as well as the new you pass down to yours that have been drawn from your life's journey and learning experiences ~ I guess that's why some BOS's get thicker each generation

I Defo agree with you Katherined. I think tradition is something that we pass down from generation to generation. And I think that's how it would relate in witchcraft too. Especially with me being a Hedgewitch. I think just because I'm not wiccan it is still a tradition. It's just not a wiccan tradition. That means I don't do things the way every other hedgewitch would do them. Our beliefs or basic types of magick may be the same, but when it comes to the day to day stuff we are all different. What I do is try to pass down my traditions to my son. Especially the way we celebrate our holidays.

Sometimes I find myself practicing a tradition that I read about and I don't know the reason or the why behind it. For instance using the clockwise and the counterclockwise or drawing the pentagram from a certain point etc.... I get that that's how it's been done and that it works, but I'm not very confident about the reasoning behind it except for, "that's how it's always been done..." I often find myself thinking that if I create my circle or pentagram one way and banish it the opposite, does it matter which way I started it with and why? I can make myself crazy by quetioning every little thing, so for the most part I just try it, accept it if it works and try to stay open to what else might make sense for me.

That is one thing I love about being a hedge. We all have our own ways of doing small things such as the way of drawing pentagrams. I draw them all the same way. But it drives me nuts when anyone does anything counter clockwise. Especially when I watch people cook on tv and they stir counter clockwise. I just want to reach into the tv and crack them over the head with the spoon.

And while they are telling you what goes into the recipe they should also be adding something like:
Always remember the oldest of herbs. The fruit of the vine, the root and the words. Throw in the stalk and the seed. Add a dash of abundance for those who need. As I continue to stir in the proper direction. Awaken and bring my will to perfection!
Okay, so Pagan cooking programs are a bit in the future???!!!

LOL! yes, maybe they are. But we have a food network, maybe they need to make a pagan cooking show. I'd be awesome at that! I do so many spells through cooking. I love feeding people, especially on sabbats and they have no idea that I've thrown in a little something extra in it I did see this woman cooking on TV with her husband and she threw salt over her shoulder and it hit her husband in the eye and he was like "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" and she was like "....uhh...throwing salt over my shoulder for luck.." It was pretty funny because she practically blinded her husband. My husband and my friends get mad at me when I do that too, lol!

In my opinion...
A "tradition" implies longevity, it's not something that can be created by doing it once. It has to have stood the test of time and still work, it can't be doing something once and calling it a tradition just because you want it to sound impressive. How much time it takes to establish tradition is debatable of course, and subjective...but I generally don't accept the phrase "tradition" on face value. It has to be backed up by logic and experience.

How many times do you need to try and find it true to call it your tradition? Some of the traditions I've taken on are old or passed down from others who found it tried and true, so they are not really my traditions until I've tried them and found them true for an extended period of time. If I call it "my" tradition, it doesn't really feel right unless of course I have actually used it for a long time and perhaps put my own spin on it. Saying, it's a family tradition, a Wiccan tradition, a coven tradition, a Native American tradition, a tradition I read about on the Magicka Forum and so on, kind of keeps it real and stops it from sounding pretentious to me. I guess when something is still new to me, before I call it a tradition, I just refer to it as a practice.
It's interesting to learn about actual traditional magical practices, how far they go back, their origination, etc...

The actual definition of tradition is "a ritual, belief or object passed down within a society, still maintained in the future, with origins in the past....the word "tradition" itself derives from the Latin tradere or traderer literally meaning to transmit, to hand over, to give for safekeeping."
It's actually quite interesting that there is such discourse between anthropology, archaeology, biology, sociology, political, religious, artistic and its relationship to other concepts ~ I think one would enjoy the articles given in Wikipedia as to the breakdown of all the foregoing areas. It definately broadened my perceptions!
I think "new" traditions are as valid as "old" traditions since after all, a tradition needs to start somewhere I would like to pass this plane knowing that I left a legacy of traditions, old and new.
I think I have,,,,My mother brought me home from the hospital in a incredibly soft fringed yellow baby blanket, I brought my daughter home from the hospital in the same blanket, my daughter brought her first child home from the hospital in it and it's very possible that my granddaughter will be bringing her first child home from the hospital in it (of course I will be guarding it the whole way from the hospital to her home), that would make it something passed through four generations and hopefully it will survive a fifth

However I always ask the goddess to bless this food and may it nourish my family's body, mind and soul. While stiring in the manner of a pentegram
