Merry Meet I have been reading a lot about the craft over the past year or so and I have not really done much practically. So far my "tool box" consists of a clear quartz pendulum, some white church type pillar candles, frankincense incense, incense stick holder, a ring binder I am using for my book of shadows and a note book for my book of mirrors. I have got some money left over from my birthday and next pay day it is going to be bonus month, some of that money is going to have to go on bills but I should have about £100 spare and I want to use it to buy some essentials before I waste it on rubbish. My questions are what do you think of as essential? Should I get some crystals, coloured candals, incense, herbs etc.? What types? What would you buy first for your alter? What would be a good deck of tarot cards for a beginner? I am intrigued by them but also a little scared as there looks like a lot to learn but I have always wanted to give it a go. And maybe a good book on tarot reading or a book a solitary should not be with out? Thank you

For tools you could always start with a wand, athame, chalice. For a wand you could perhaps find one out in Nature. Be aware that different woods will generate different energies. There's a thread on this somewhere - sorry I can't remember where, though. Before buying crystals it might be a good idea to know some of their energies and what they can help you with. Different people around here have their favourite authors and boods but I Scott Cunningham's Wicca For the Solitary Practitioner seems to be very popular. I like Janet & Stewart Farrar's The Witches' Bible but it's quite in depth and may not be the best one to start with. The Wicca course here at Magicka is a good place to start, though and there is a Tarot course as well. For learning the symbolism of Tarot I always recommend the Rider Waite deck and then you can change to something else later if you wish but again someone else might have different ideas.

IMO a great deck of tarot cards for beginners is the spiral tarot. The way the book that goes with it explains the tarot in a way that will really stick with you.

I like the Tarot Bible, and Tarot 101, they are really good for beginners. And I love Ciro M. the Legacy deck.
As far as tools, Athame, Wand, Alter Pentacle, Chalice, and a few small bowels, and sea salt
Good luck Blessings Elia V

Thanks, I went shopping today bought the Tarot Bible, and the Crystal Bible, thought I should do some reading on crystals before I start buying them. Ended up getting the raider/waite tarot deck. There's not many shops round me that sell alter tools but I am planning on going on a trip to visit some friends soon and I am sure the shops round there will have everything I need if not I think I might have to have a look online

I've been a "rock collector" all my life so I have ton's of natural gemstones and the amethyst is my birthstone so I have always had good energy with amethyst crystals. Through my Native teachings I've always had Red Jasper and Pipestone in my medicine bag (wonderful grounding stones). The first crystals I purchased were clear quartz cyrstals and points for wand making - You can never go wrong having lots of clear crystal quartz. Might I suggest you try purchasing an inexpensive Chakra set (I'll be adding some to my store soon....hint, hint ) and working with them will give you a nice variety of gemstones to see how their energies work with you.
And tools ~ definately a wand (I made mine), athame, alter pentacle (I made mine), chalice (wonderful finds iin your own home & thrift stores & eBay!), candles, incense, sea salt - bowls (you probably have something you like right there at home).....
And books will keep you broke if you haven't spent it all elsewhere!! -LOL-
Blessings, Silver Firelite
