what an interesting thread. Great to read people views.
I'm not sure about my thoughts on reincarnation yet. We touched on it briefly at work the other day in the staff room. I was told that at death everyone looses the same amount of weight. That they have documented this and everyone loses the same amount at the same time, the moment they die. It's thought this is our soul leaving our body. The woman who told me this is not christian (most people at my work are) but she wasnt sure what happens next. Noone was really sure about reincarnation.
I've always been sure of one thing though, if we do reincarnate, then this is my first time round (or as some people have put it, I'm a young soul) I have no sence of past lives and for a 33 year old I am very...... young! (I even look young!)
Some people have said that they think certain souls always meet, animal and human. Do you think we can meet in the one life time? I'm wondering about my dog. I loved him very much, he was my best friend and got me through a lot of hard times. He died three and a half years ago and I miss him every day (although I stopped smelling sencing and hearing him after about two years) Do you think it's possible that he will come back into my life in this life time?
I also dont think I have met a soul mate yet. Not a human one anyway! (My pony is def my soul mate, as was my dog. People think I'm odd but I can speak to him, and he does reply!)

Personally I do believe that it is possible for your dog to come back to you in this lifetime. We had a white shepard that we bottle fed from the age of two weeks and thought we would never have a dog like her again after she passed. Several years went by and then two years ago our granddaughter dropped a golden lab in our laps and he is Ona in every way but one - - she protected the house first and was friendly when we told her it was ok, then she would lick and love ~ Milo is just the licker and lover and as far as protection goes, he makes a great door stop ,,,,who knows neither of us have been in a threating situation and maybe in that instance he would act differently (our friend's dog did) but until then that is the only thing that separates their personalities.
As far as a dog or your horse being your soul mate ~ I firmly believe that our animal totems are a part of our soul as mine are both horse (my right side/male), and dog (my left side/female), and I can communicate with them 500% better than I can with my human mates and I could tell you a hundred stories where you would see that to be true. Many Blessings, Silver Firelite

Reincarnation is one of those topics from which I still feel very confused. Perhaps someone can refer me to informative or enlightening material to look over. I DO believe the stories I have read about children who seem to have the knowledge and personality of someone who recently passed, in fact, I asked my youngest son (when he was two yrs old) who he was before he came to be with me. His answer floored me! He gave me a man's French name (I think it was Jacques), said he was an artist (non-famous) and there was no hesitation in his answers. The things he said to me could not have been overheard from any conversation he may have heard. Anyway, I HAVE had a twice-recurring dream (that seemed more like a true memory) of being in a spiritual "waiting place" for passed over souls. It was SO REAL, even compared to my premonition dreams, etc. Anyway, I recall feeling the shift from remaining there to coming "back" to "life" in a new birth, and feeling a bit of dismay about it. All this said, I still have so many questions and obstacles before I can say that I truly believe in reincarnation. For example, IF we are reincarnated, why has the population grown so drastically? Is there birth of "new" souls as well? Also, what about the dinosaurs? What were they incarnated into? Does anyone else ever think that perhaps (please don't laugh, it's only a thought) that we might be either a "science experiment" for beings not from Earth, OR that we are what is leftover after earlier ancestors (or a line of them with extreme intelligence) fled the Earth? I'm sure I will remember more of my questions and will add to this later, but for now I will leave you with the laugh of the "science experiment thing". Oh, forgot to add, I had LOTS of instances of deja' vu until I was about 14 yrs old and always felt strongly that I would die young. Perhaps in a prior life I did die young since I don't have deja vu anymore (?). I'm not sure I believe in reincarnating until we reach some sort of "perfection"...so confusing.

Green Witch,
Very good question! And I bet that if you ask 10 people, you will get 11 answers!
But, I wanted to tell you that there is a very good thread on this same subject in the Witches' Moot. It is called "How old, is a Soul?" and it is placed quite a few places down from yours. Hope it helps.

A soul is infinte.
So what happens when a soul is divided in half? You get to infinite things!
My path has souls are life energy, life force, when someone passes on the soul goes into hibernation to replenish itself and be reborn - but what of people who die in accidents and while still so full of life?
The soul is forced into hibernation but is too vibrant, it divides out of necessity to replenish and be reborn with a new spirit. The modern age has many more people and many more lethal accidents leaving many more souls to divide and seeking to awaken within a new vessel.

Have you seen the research and work of Ian Stevenson? Really fascinating stuff that might interest you~
Personally I wonder if some of the other species that have gone extinct were somehow "recycled" into other lifeforms - such as into humans.
The "alien" theory is always an interesting one, and theres another topic around here somewhere that discusses the various "Sky People" from old cultures, cave drawings, etc etc.
Will we ever know? *shrug* :)

Kiyuu,
Thank you for the information. Certainly, Ian Stevenson's work was fascinating. I have read from other sources some very similar findings and studies. I will continue to look - I'd like to see if I can find any of his reports or thesis. One thing that jumps out at me is that perhaps those families in his studies "wanted" their lost child back so deeply that they could have subconsciously "molded" the next born into acting and behaving in certain ways.

What a great thread! Being fairly new to this all I have some thoughts but very much still learning and deciding what I believe the process to be. I have always believe reincarnation to be the start of the process though and I believe that all living things have souls, even some non-living things certainly have strong energies. (We have a great rock formation near where I live with 135 million year old sandstone. Its a bit of a climbing hotspot but the energy there is amazing, its such a beautiful place). Although I have not made up my mind what happens when our bodies die and our souls do in the stage between the next life I did once hear something very nice. Someone once told me they believed the soul spent some time through a contemplation and cleansing period then moves on to almost create the new life, and then goes on to live through it, almost as if living through different scenarios created. Obviously there are holes and questions raised with this idea but I still think its a nice thought, your soul going on to learn by creating and living through lives.

I have always believed in reincarnation, since a small child. I feel I am an old soul and have been told that as well by a great number of spiritual people. I believe that we rest and rejuvenate between lives when we rejoin with the universal 'all'. So even though we may feel too tired to do it again at the end of this life, by the time we've spent some time joined with the greater eneregy we are ready to incarnate again for another learning experience. I have never met someone who feels that they have actualized everything the world has to offer, but I'm sure there are some people who have or are close too it. If so and there are other worlds, it's always possible that we move on to those other worlds with different possibilities.
On the topic of dinosaurs, I've always felt that they are where the myths of dragons came from and sure our souls could evolve from plant or animal forms. I'm pretty sure my dog will be a person in his next life!!! He will probably be very annoying to the old souls!!!

How old is a soul? Well how long is a piece of string?
I don't believe souls are all the same age, there are new ones created fairly regularly - they are the force of life afterall.

im not the the most articulate at the best of times so im just going to jump straight in with my pennies worth. its very similar to what has already been said but here it goes anyways...
the origin of the soul isnt entireley clear to me other than it is a divine spark within us that allows us to connect with the universe and the god/esses of our world.
i do not think that there is a finite number of souls. i do not believe that there is one soul for each and every person that has or ever will be. instead i fully believe in reincarnation and that the soul takes a journery, with the end goal being to become part of the Divinty which created it. just as souls leave the wheel of life and join the Divinity new ones are constantly added.
How long a journey the soul has to take depends entirely on the soul in question. many people believe that a soul has to learn so many lessons before it is able to move on, i agree with this to a certain degree. i think a soul can choose which life lessons it wishes to learn before it is reincarnated into its next form, so which lessons they learn is entirely upto them. what i believe holds a soul back from becoming part of the Divinity is either it chooses to do so because it wants another turn on the wheel to help its soulmates or that it hasnt learnt all the fundamental truths about itself.
okay im going to have to explain that last part i know. i believe in soulmates and that each soul has several of them. A soulmate being someone that is part of our very being and who we recognise ourselvves in and reveals a truth about us. in my current life i have 4 soulmates that i recognise. my brother, my father my boyfriend and a very dear friend of mine, (oddly enough he happens to be an ex). in each of the souls reincarnations, it gathers its soulmates around them, so in my next life i will still have the 4 soulmates i recognise now but my soul will also draw other soulmates of mine closer to me so that it may recognise them and what they have to teach my soul. i believe that before we are able to move on to the next stage of our journey the souls is reincarneted over and over until it has found all of its soulmates and learns the truth of its nature.
I would be very interested to learn the past lives of my soul. i say my souls past life and not mine as i believe we are made of body soul and spirit. the soul is what gets reincarnated and learns and grows and becomnes Divinity. but the spirit is what makes me me.
i hope my little ramblings on make some sort of sense to you all =]

I've found this a very interesting thread and I have enjoyed reading everyones different views on the subject. In my job people die and one thing we always do is to open a window to let their soul out. It doesn't matter if you believe it or not, it's just something we do. It was what I was taught and I pass it on to the new staff. For sometime now I have met people and they have told me their names but I instantly call them by another name. I don't feel like I have met them before but it feels so natural to me to call them by this other name. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm not sure if I believe in reincarnation but I like the idea of it. I know from my life sometimes I wish I could come back because I know there are alot of things I would change. I used to know a man who always said "You have to live your life twice to put right the mistakes you have made" Have I learnt anything? well yes, I wouldn't waste money like I did when I was younger, especially as now I haven't got any As I said earlier this is a very interesting subject that I would like to learn more about

Greetings Blumoon, I have hear of other nurses doing that. Maybe it just helps the soul from being tied to the hospital and becoming stuck.
