This is so sad. A tree held sacred by Pagans & Christians destroyed by vandals. I'm so sad. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstop ... nbury.html

It IS sad about the thorn tree, I wonder if it's possible for it to survive because they said there are some roots left.

There are roots, it will depend on how badly the plant is shocked. Sometimes we as humans forget plants are a life, and alive. The Thorn is also pretty prolific, and there are sprouts around. That's what they did when it was killed in the British Civil War. I hope it makes it. Maybe we should all send healing to it, Reiki if you're attuned, whatever you usually use.

ive heard its in the process of hopefully being saved! and i know there are TONS of folks praying, casting spells and whatnot to help it out i read on FB thru a friends page that people had done it because their own warped views whatnot; basically they cut it down because it is a false idol to us. and apparently we should be worshipping god, not a tree. GRRRR..... a real christian would not have killed the tree i think! and besides, who made the tree? God did! and why not appreciate such a beautiful creation; to me, killing it is like mocking "god".

Crataegus oxycantha goes far back in history. It was likely one of the Celtic Runic symbols. More profoundly, Crataegus is one of the world's premier heart-maintenance medicines. Note that modern students of Mycology (the study of fungi) have lost the thread to Crataegus: it was on the campus of the University of Michigan that Crataegus berries, placed in a stream, were used as attractant for Blastocladiella, a chytrid fungus. Note that it is indeed a chytrid fungus that is now decimating world amphibians: Batrachochytrium.
Paradoxically, the Catholic University in Ecuador is studying this amphibian problem, and an article which we can cite later in National Geographic Magazine reveals the remarkable diversity if Ecuadorian species. The world has given us 6,000 species, and a clue to the detrimental effects of the fungus lies in the chemistry of Crataegus species. One can readily guess that this writer is not pleased with the violence done at Glastonbury.
It is difficult to place this message in this thread: when superimposing a world map of epi-paleozoic coal-forming deposits, we note that these occur alnong the Gulf Coast of the U.S., Spain, across most of Russia, and the east coast of Australia. Therefore, if anyone else can point this out to amphibian-lovers and students of Batrachochytrium in Australia, we note here that this superimposed map exactly fits for the occurrence of Australian Batrachochytrium. In doing so, the reader can at least do something about Stupidity, while simultaneously revering one of Nature's best medicines. These Australian maps may link to retroactive effects precisely at the BP oil spill site.

The National Geographic Magazine article is cited here:
Holland JS, The Vanishing, National Geographic Magazine April 2009.
A botanist is not quite sure, yet Ecuadorians studying Batrachochytrium are in an excellent position to resolve the following mystery, and we who know can cut across religious, political, and state lines to underscore our collective concern for Nature:
In describing species encountered, Spruce writes....
'....A Petiveraceae, a Crataegus (or something nearly allied), etc.....' (Spruce R, Notes of a Botanist on the Amazon and Andes, Chapter: In the Ecuadorian Andes)
Science is being stingy with information on the genome of Batrachochytrium, likely because it may reveal the inherent problems of petroleum addiction.

Glastonbury vandalism occurred on Wednesday, 8 Dec 2010. Holbrooke went into hospital for torn aorta on Friday, 10 Dec 2010. It was, therefore, somewhat strange to see the plant, Oxycantha, being trimmed in New Mexico on Sunday, 12 Dec 2010. It is not known whether the trimming of this shrub may be a calendrical Hispanic tradition.

Errata: What was proposed to be Oxycantha is actually of the Genus Pyracantha.
'22136. Pyracantha angustifolia, Narrow Leaf Firethorn (Rosaceae), Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hot Springs National Park.
22137. Pyracantha coccinea Scarlet Firethorn (Rosaceae) U.S., Europe, F. Law Olmstead National Historical Park, John Muir National Historical Site, Turkey. Cardiac, cyanogenic, diuretic, poison.
22138. Pyracantha fortuneana (Rosaceae) No further data.' (Johnson T, CRC Ethnobotany Desk Reference, CRC Press [1999])
Further chemistry and worldwide ethnobotanical use of Pyracantha is beyond the scope of this writer's knowledge.
