Spiral Scouts, for those that may not have heard of them, are a fairly new scouting organization started by the Aquarian Tabernacle Church. They put a lot of emphasis on coed activities, caring for the earth, and educating children about different cultures and faiths around the world. I don't know very much about them myself (all that info I just pulled off their website), and there aren't any groups near where I live. http://www.spiralscouts.org/
Two things I'm curious about:
1) Does anyone here have children in Spiral Scouts, and if so, what is it like?
2) Were any of you in Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts growing up? Was your experience good...bad...ho-hum? Would you enroll your children in these programs, if they showed interest?

I was in Boy Scouts when I was younger. I wouldn't completely say it was a bad experience, but for me personally there were pros and cons:
Pros:
-Being out in nature
-Learning to better take care of the Earth
-A deeper level of familiarization with various plants and animals
Cons:
-Heavy christian overtones
-Close mindedness
-A serious lack of diversity
Of course this is speaking of the Boy Scouts in the area that I grew up in, in the Northern United States. I now live in the Souhern United States, and have noticed an overall drop in diversity, so I imagine it might be even worse here in this area.
Overall, it wasn't for me. If you'd like to get your children outside in nature, I recommend family camping trips and hikes rather than Boy Scouts. Or perhaps look into this Spiral Scouts thing... it sounds fairly promising

MM Amaranth Nightphoenix,
I was in Girl Scouts for a huge chunk of my younger years..I progressed to the different levels and everything! I actually enjoyed it very much so. It began in NY and then when I moved to Florida, I continued with it out there.
For me, it was mostly pros. I love the diversity, the activities involving nature, girl power, etc. The only con was that I grew out of it! LOL
If I ever have children and they show an interest in any scouting group, after doing my homework, making sure there aren't any cult related issues , I would support it for them.
As far as Spiral Scouts go, this is the first I'm hearing about it. It sounds very interesting though, thanks for the link.

I also like the sound of Spiral Scouts, it's definately something to think about starting one in my area if there isn't one already.
I was in Girl Scouts growing up and my Mom was the leader. It was very fun. I had alot of badges too. I still have my sash, beanie and pins!!! As I got older---middle school age, I tried continuing but I lost interest. At that time I joined Job's Daughters, a masonic organization for young girls.

I was in girlscouts Kindergaren through third grade. I loved it I went to girlscout camp in the summer and we did a lot of different activities that were good for the earth (we were encouraged to car for the earth) We did cooking actvities and learned about different cultures. I think this new spiral scout thing sounds good. I think you should conciter it for yourchild. The church part doesnt' even scare me off. I would be sure to tlet them know that your child is being raised as a pagan, but this really sounds like a wonderful group!!

OMG!!! Thanks so much for posting the link! I have one in my town here actually! so i emailed the lady about how to sign up my older 2 boys (the age starts at 4 btw....)
So ill let you all know what its like, how it goes etc etc....
They are very open minded regarding religion etc and it seems to have quite a few pagan families involved, so im pretty psyched

It sounds a bit too good to be true doesn't it?!
Unfortunately, they don't have any active groups in the UK. But who knows, in the future maybe they will. I love the sound of any organisation who's core value is tolerance and respect over preaching and indoctrination.

The thing to remember is that if they don't have one in your area, just like girl scouts/boy scouts, an interested parent can start one!

I really do like the sound of this Spiral Scouts thing.
I don't know bout girl scouts, but boy scouts was heavily christian influenced. Very very very heavily.
I like the Spiral Scouts support of Coexistance

Ok, well, they are fast! I got an email after only a couple hours actually unfortunately the Eugene,OR "hearth" is full, but my kids are going on the waiting list. there is also a possibility that new hearths can open up as some parents are ready to co-host a hearth with other parents. unfortunately thats just not something i can literally, physically do right now
on the other hand, it gives me hope that maybe my boys can start semi soon'ish! so ill let y'all know how this turns out.......
i like how they have a 3-8 age group too, that way my middle boy (age 4) is eligible to go to! and only another year or so before my youngest could join

Hmmm, this Spiral Scouts thing sounds good. My kids are in boy/girl scouts. My daughter became a Juliette(lone scout) because the troops here aren't very non-Christian tolerant even though they encourage diversity on all levels. I'm gonna look into it.

I tried looking for Spiral Scouts in my area (North Dakota) and there wasn't anything. Hopefully you have better luck!
I had never heard of a Juliette scout so I looked that up and sent in for more information, hoping my daughter will be able to go that route. Between living out in the sticks and our beliefs, the Girl Scouts around here are very Christian orientated and not very excepting.

I was in the Girl Scouts and I LOVED it. Even though I was a shy kid who didn't want to do much of anything involving other people, I happily jumped right into it. The only reason I stopped doing it (partway through Junior, started as a Brownie) is because everyone else quit the group I was in and unfortunately, I lived in the middle of nowhere so that was the only one. I honestly can't recall strong Christian overtones. We had our meetings in churches sometimes, but that was pretty much normal for any organizations where I am from because they were the only places big enough to meet in, unless it was something we did outside. That's the only reason. So if I had girls, I'd happily let them join the Girl Scouts if they wanted. Spiral Scouts sounds pretty fun too, I'll have to look into that once I start thinking about having kids.
