Lesson 1 Research Project
I chose to use the Gardnerian & the Seax-Wicca as my two traditions of Wicca or witch craft to do my project on.

The Gardnerian traditions were founded by Gerald Gardner. It was started in Europe & was based in Bricketts Wood St. Albans . It currently operates in the United States, Europe and Asia. The Gardnerian tradition has a system that is the three degree system. There are publications on the Gardnerian traditions.

The Seax-Wicca tradition was founded by Raymond Buckland. It was started in the United States & was based in the United States. It currently operates in Japan, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Russia and the United States. The Seax-Wicca does not use a degree system but it does use the self-initiate system. There are publications on the Seax-Wicca tradition.

I believe that both are good traditions but I think that the Seax-Wicca having the self-initiate system is better because a lot of people don’t have a lot of time to be in a Coven so they go on as singles & with the self-initiate system they don’t have to go through the three degree system other than that I believe both are great traditions

I think it is important to note that the thing about intiation versus self-dedication has caused a great deal of hoopla in some circles. I don't write to add to the controversy but to help put it to rest.
Not being initiated does not deprive you of participation in most practices of the Craft and doesn't really mean you have to wait for being a new witch. That is where self-dedication comes in. One can self-dedicate in the event that a member of the High Priesthood of the Tradition you wish to join is not present and cannot initiate you; however, initiation is not the same as self-dedication. It depends on the Tradition too. Some will only initiate and only initiates can participate in the particular practices of that particular Tradition. This does not mean, however, that one cannot be a witch with another group who happens to accept self-dedication.
Initiation has to be done by someone else because there are some things that can only be passed down that way, including some mysteries, as in the great Mystery Religions. Most non-eclectic Traditions require initiation, which by it's own meaning of the word implies being initiated by someone. One cannot self-inititiate but can self-dedicate.
Finally, if one wants to be initiated into a Tradition that does not accept self-dedication, studying with that Tradition can be done and self-deciation performed until one can be initiatiated by someone. That will enable you to do some enough things in the Craft until Initiation can be possible. Many times we find a particular Tradition that strikes our fancy, only to then learn that that Tradition does not have a coven at or in the outskirts of where one lives. In that case one has to join, from what is available, the closest one to what one feels identified with. And maybe later on found one's own group, which it's not easy and takes time. The solitary practioner option is also available of course.
