Hiya! For the deities books...I would recommend "The New Book of Goddesses and Heroines" by Patricia Monaghan and "The Ancient & Shining Ones" by D.J. Conway.

There are a number of books that claim to be 'encyclopedias' of mythology and the Gods and Goddesses. But, for my money I've found that a book that tries to be so broad as to cover the dozens of cultural pantheons usually misses a great deal of the detail needed to get a good understanding.
I would recommend starting with a single culture's pantheon. Celtic, Egyptian, Greek or Roman, Norse, or Chinese -- pick one that appeals to you -- either you've heard some of the stories and found that they touch you deeply, or perhaps you have a genealogical link to one culture over another.
I did go over to Amazon.com and did a quick search for Gods and Goddesses and they pulled up a few titles. You might try that too and see what may be available.
Good Luck on your search, if you do find a book in this category please share it.

There is a website called God Checker, which is a great starting point. There are also very interesting articles at Encyclopedia Mythica.
Save money on books until you know which particular deity you wish to investigate and then buy reference materials specific to them.

Here's something - there are a lot of books on Goddesses, but next to nearly nothing on Gods.

Two books I love on Gods and Goddesses are 'Invoke the God' and 'Invoke the Goddess' both by Kala Trobe. Each book takes five Gods or Goddesses fom the Greek, Epytion and Hindu pantheons and not only does the author give beautifully descriptive accounts of their attributes but also visulisations on how to connect with their particular wavelengths.
