"Here follow the holy pentacles, expressed in their proper figures and characters, together with their especial virtues; for the use of the master of art." ~The Greater Key of Solomon Part II

Image

I present to you a summation of the great Planetary Pentacles found in The Greater Key of Solomon II. The Pentacles are a series of designs intended to be worn or otherwise inscribed in applied magical workings, especially those concerning work with spirits.

A cautionary note - I have not provided the essential information here necessary to enable some of these pentacles to perform their intended uses for the reason that real danger exists from the misuse and misunderstanding of the magic and purpose of these Pentacles and all other magic of this nature. I have provided the pentacles and the basic information concerning them for passing interest, only.

I will be providing one planetary set of pentacles per segment, the first of which are the seven pentacles of Saturn.

This is great, T. Very interesting stuff. Is this something that is common in Ceremonial Magick and say... the Golden Dawn teachings, or is it discouraged even for those adepts? Messing around with summoning and controlling spirits isn't something that I'd ever be comfortable doing, regardless of how much knowledge and experience I had.

It's definitely not for everyone. It's not 'required' of all ceremonial/ritual magicians, but it's quite a defining element. Most traditions incorporate some form or another of spirit work, but it's not all 'demonic' or 'bad' spirits. Summoning and commanding spirits is a repeated theme amongst almost all of the ancient grimoires. Some traditions use these pentacles, but also these have been corrupted and used to make money by Goth jewelers who sell these and some of the seals of the Goetian and Teurgian spirits as fashion items.

Aside from that, MacGregor-Mathers of Golden Dawn fame was reputed to have been obsessed with Mars and the sephirah of Geburah...and Aleister Crowley claimed that he (Mathers) had attracted dark forces beyond his comprehension and control to himself.

Torey!!! Don't make my head hurt like that...I am very proud of my brain cell and don't like to overuse it...just a question and I really just need a simple comparison...are those pentacles similar (!) to runes at least in their use and objective?

Hey, ISO2. :D Um...I wouldn't really seek to say that they're similar. They're very different on so many levels - the pentacles are primarily for use in talismans and amulets when summoning and working solely with spirits (although some of them do have other uses), whereas the runes are a primarily divinatory tool (and sometimes used in spellwork and ritual).

The only thing that I can think of that would be similar between them, really, would be if you were summoning spirits with which to divine. The pentacles really are not intended to be used in general spellwork or rituals, though some people do. I really can't say that they are similar to the runes, but a viable question, indeed! :D

Exactly right on both counts, ISO2. :D Again, not something for everyone, but definitely not for dabbling! Blessings!

one comment and its not even really mine :-) ..Raymond Buckland has called this kind of magick more or less overkill and compared it to powering a transistor radio with a 1000 volt power line...I think in essence what he suggests is why complicate things if you don't have to (and I know I am terribly hacking into his words and paraphrasing might be a euphemism here...) magick is complicated enough as it is...

That's a good point to raise, ISO2. But of course Buckland would say that as he is promoting his own tradition lol

One could well argue that Wicca and the low magick practices under-complicate things to the point of ineffectiveness. A ceremonial magician may argue that low magick practitioners have no use for such 'complicated' rites as theirs because low magick practitioners rarely subscribe to many (if any) of the beliefs and goals of high magic and vice-versa.

For instance...you could compare high magic and these elaborate rites to flying a jet...whereas low magick may be more like flying a small crop-duster. Both have their complexities pertaining to their own build and function, and both perform the same task in the end which is flying. :D

The founders of Wicca had no use for the goals or practices of high magic at all. As high magic focuses on union with the Divine, low magic is more about the present and bettering of oneself physically and spiritually in preparation for the next life. Low magic does not seek union with the Divine. The concepts of Kabbalah (which has great importance in most forms of high magic) are alien to most Wiccans and folk magick practitioners. Therefore they would have no use for rites and symbols used in high magic.

High magic's rites, quite simply, do (effectively) what they are designed to do. Work with conjuring and controlling spirits and achieving union with the Divine (or as some would see it, ascension). Low magick's rights do (effectively) what they are designed to do. So both live in harmony and effectively achieve their own goals.

There really can be no comparison in ways as they are so very different in many ways. I hope this helps. :D

did it help? That is so relative...it explained but at the same time opened a hundred new questions...but that is the fun of it...i guess..and the image of Mr. Buckland flying a crop duster full of pesticides is somewhat hillarious (no disrespect...)

You know you guys, and Torey, you are right. There are a lot of people

that do not want to use high magick that are low magicians. And a lot of

witches that are pagans have a hard time dealing with high magick

because of the hebrew god in it. I was looking at the seals in the

Quabalistic teachings because of some spiritual beings I was dealing with

myself, but I decided this was much too involved for my level of teaching,

and so I asked the goddess for a couple of years, why don't we have

have things like that in our Tradition ? How come we don't have magical

seals and whatnot? Then one day, I was looking for something over the

web, and I found Raven Grimassi's seals that he has constructed for

us "low magic" practitioners. They are safe to use, and also if you are

not a skilled Kabbalists, like Torey did warn, you could put yourself in

terrible danger using those seals. But Raven Grimassi's, (he's the man

that brought to us the "Aridian" Tradition of Stregheria Witchcraft), his

seals are suppose to be used pretty safely. He's the one that

wrote, "Raising a Plant Familiar". You can find it on the web. It's called

Hereditary Witchcraft, a pagan forum". It's all very good stuff, and worth

practicing with while being a student of the Quabala. It's practice. And for

us "low magicians", it gives us something to work with. The book that you

will find these seals in is called "The Witch's Familiar" by Raven Grimassi.

His book describes how to work with many familiars, it's very good.

I think definitely it's good to be aware of what you're trying to do and how much power you will need to accomplish it, and then select the proper techniques. My experience is that magic always seems to work best for me if I use the lowest amount of energy that will still get the job done, that way it doesn't careen out of control or just outright fail to produce any effects at all, which actually seems to be the more common result for spells that I have over-powered. Hence I mainly wind up using "low magic" (read: low complexity) techniques like sigils, sympathetic magic, and simple prayer and meditation for a lot of things. That said, though, occasionally there are things I need to do that require a little more "kick."

I wouldn't spray my fields with a super sonic jet, but then again I wouldn't try to fly a crop duster across the Atlantic. It all depends on what you need to do.
