Dracos, what do paths and pathnumbers mean, and how do you use them is the Tarot? Lonna

O.K. This is easier to draw out than to describe, but hopefully you have seen a Kabbalistic 'Tree of Life' -- it is a drawing of ten spheres, called Sepheroth, that are connected, the paths between the spheres are then numbered, and these are the 'path numbers' in the chart.

By example in the chart:

Tarot Card: The Fool
Sign: Air
Kabbalah Name: Aleph
English Meaning: Ox
Path: Kether to Chockmah -- Kether and Chockmah are 2 Sepheroth
Path no: 11 -- this is the number of the path between the 2 Sepheroth

When someone studies both Tarot and Kabbalah -- the paths and the cards can 'influence' how each is interpeted. The minor arcana, in Tarot, are associated with the 10 Sepheroth, on the Tree.

Many see the Tarot, and the Tree of Life, as guides to our 'journeys' in life... They use them both as meditational tools.

I hope this is somewhat helpful.

Blessed Be

Thank you Dark Moon Lily and Dracos. I havn't signed up for the tarot class yet, because I didn't know how involved the beginning craft course would be. I will be sooo glad when these essays and my first test is finished. It was plenty of hard work and study. This tree is amazing. I don't understand it, but it is amazing. So I will have to study the Kabbala to do learn this kind of tarot. Absolutely amazing.

Helela, I for one would never claim to understand it, and I've been reading things about the 'Tree of Life' for going on 20 years... There are a multitude of volumes about the 'Tree'. Many of those never mention the Tarot. There are also quite a few 'Tarot' books that examine the relationship with the 'Tree' without going in-depth into all of the other aspects and meanings of the Tree.

The easiest explanation I've ever heard goes something like --- Above Kether (the top sphere) is everything united into the Divine as to be no one thing... until there was the beginnings of a spark of an idea... and it grew in formulation... separating, and merging, and developing... at once like a lightning bolt... but also slowly serpentine from one to many to all… at once darkness and light… and balance… and in its final emanation is everything that ever was or is manifest -- Earth, and the elements that build our reality are only a part of the tenth sphere.

There are many 'Tree' correspondences -- animals, and numbers, and colors, and plants, and the zodiac... just to name a few.

Like I said, I couldn't possible claim to understand all that the 'Tree' is reputed to be... It is fun learning about it though.

Blessed Be

You know, as I was looking at the chart on the bottom, it shows the Moon as the foundation. I think I'm starting to understand this tree a little bit just by looking at it, and I know that it also has to do with our chrakras, right? Actually, I know it has to do with a lot more than our chakras, but I can see that right away. If I had a book, it would explain some of it some more. I'm going to keep looking and studying these trees. They are very interesting. I just don't get the binding of the spirits up. I wouldn't use them if I had to bind them and adhere them in the name of God. But I can just study these other things can't I and learn from them? Helela.

Yes Helela, many of us here only take what 'rings true in our hearts' from any field of study.

The ninth sphere is associated with the moon, and the others have planetary associations too. The tenth and final sphere is associated with the Earth.

And they are also seen in a similar vain as Chakras. I have seen depictions of the Tree where a human figure stands upon the Earth, or tenth sphere, and the sixth sphere is at the level of the heart. If you can picture the proportions of that, the three topmost spheres are beyond the human body -- that are therefore interpreted as being above the physical and mental levels, they are on a spiritual level -- and separated from us.

Did you notice, in the second more detailed picture there is an 'extra' sphere? Notice where it is in relationship to the 'levels' I just mentioned. Also notice that it is not numbered, but it is labeled. Let me know what you think of the fact that it appears on one of the pictures and not the other.

Enjoy looking at the pictures -- there are multiple levels to understanding the Tree -- even just a little bit.

Blessed Be

the 'extra sphere' is Da'ath. its not so much a Sephira as a region. a question about it was asked in the kabbalah forum and both pino nad templumkat gave very good answers. here's the link for the thread:

Hello Whiteraven and Darkmoon Lily. I hope all is well with you. Yes, I did notice last night when I was looking at the bottom chart that Dracos put up for us that it did have an extra sphere, or orb. I was trying to figure it out, but now that you have pointed it out, I went back to look at it, and I went to the thread that you gave me, and it is the mind, (our knowing). Maybe the mind itself. Is it our "minds eye" that is the all knowing? I am fascinated withthese beautiful trees. And I'm very interested in learning these things. Besides me being so busy with the beginning course here on Witchcraft, I'm also taking an Astrology class on my own, which has taken a backseat because of my essays. I worked really hard on them. When things slow down a little and get a little easier for me in my class here, I'll resume my astrology class. I want to learn the tarot, and also the runes, but I thought I should learn astrology first, and then maybe the runes and the tarot at the same time. I feel astrology and the runes are both important in the tarot. I have thirteen goals this year, they may be the same goals next year also. I have completed one, am working on two others. It seems as if most of these things are never done because we are always learning. I know I'm a horrible chatter box, but I want to tell you two about this. I'm sooo excited.

Hi Helela,

I have a lot of these drawings if you would like them. I could always post a few up in the Kabbalah discussion group, or post them directly to you if you would like to see them. I Have the one DML mentioned, and quite a few others. Please let me know if you would like to see them.

Bright Blessings Lonna,

You know Dracos, I bet you Darkmoon Lily and whiteraven would love to see those pictures too. Put them up where everyone can see them. They're really fascinating. They are really a blessing.

This is most fascinating; although I am going to admit I honestly donot inderstand it :? I have tht this subject on Kabbalah quite intriguing, but I must say that I am not fully understanding or maybe I am just not seeing it. Any good "first timer" books to read to maybe help? From who all have posted I gather that Kabbalah is an ongoing learning. This I have no problem with as I like to know more.

The picture posted does help a bit, but it is very confusing when first looking at it and all the different aspects it has. That seems very overwhelming. I have only begun to fully understand the Tarot; as I have just signed up for the free Tarot course. My first test is not until next week.

After rereading alot of my wicca books that I got in the beginning of new found path I am recognizing and finally fully understanding what was written. Plus, I see words; such as Kabbalah, and want to know about it  . Sometimes, I even get the feeling of: Gosh, did I really read this book  ? I do not remember that? Just trying to understand a bit since this word has come up several times in my new reading time :D

Brightest Blessings!

Hi Adarian,

A book I found very good was Lon Milo Duuette, Chicken Qabbalah. It is funny, and imformative. There is a write up about it in the Kabbalah discusion board that might help.

Hi Helela,

I posted the pics up in the Kabbalah Discussion thread, for all to see, but the question of copyright came up and I deleted them, as I did here.

The pictures were copyrighted 2004, and i dont know if this is in violation so i deleted them just in case.

Bright Blessings
