My grandma taught me this when I was little. She said she learned it from my grandpa's grandma. It's insanely simple, but super delicious!
What you need: 1 Sun Tea Container 6 (or so) decent sized lemons Sugar
Step 1: Cut lemons along their 'equator', then half them again- so you get quarters. DO NOT TAKE OFF THE RINDS! Step 2: Put lemons, unsqueezed, into a Sun Tea container. Step 3: Fill with water Step 4: Set container in the sun. Every few hours, turn it up side down and back again to mix things up- just make sure you check to make sure the lid is secure first! The heat of the sun will allow things to expand and the lid might not be as tight as it once was! Step 5: Let the container sit outside all night. Let it sit for 24 hours. Step 6: The next day, as you remove the lemons, give them a squeeze. Do this IN the water, because it makes squeezing them easier. Step 7: Strain out any seeds. This step is optional. Personally, I think the seeds give it extra character! LOL! Step 8: Add about 6-7 lemon slices back to the container. This is great for presentation and helps with flavor as well. Step 9: Add sugar to taste.
Enjoy! This yields about 6-8 cups, depending on cup size. If you are taking this to an event (like Memorial Day or something) make several containers, because it doesn't last long!
I've tried doing this recipe by putting the container in the fridge, and just letting the lemons sit for a little while longer. It really doesn't have the same taste. You really need the sun to make it taste worthwhile. Otherwise, it's really a disappointment, especially after you have tasted it when it's been made in the sun VS. not in the sun.

I don't have a sun tea container but I do have some super large jars. About how much water does a sun tea container hold?---so I can see if my super large jar is big enough!

I think about a gallon, maybe closer to 2 liters. About that much, give or take. It's better for it to be too lemony, and you just add more water, than for it to be to watery.

Please let me know how it turns out, or if you try any variations. I'm very open to trying some variations for a little change of pace.

Thanks for sharing this! This would be nice to make for when we have a barbeque.
Now don't laugh but what's a sun tea container? Is this some sort of special container? I've never heard of it so i'm hoping it's cause it's something in America and not just that i'm clueless! lol

Yes, they are available here in the U.S. although it's been some time since I've seen one anywhere. Basically, you put tea bags and water in a jar and it brews without boiling the water in the natural heat of the sun.

Thanks KatherineD. I haven't been on for a little bit. Yes, a sun tea container is a giant glass jar (usually they have a pretty hand painted design on the outside). Usually they have a spout on the bottom (like a beer keg) for filling glasses. I would think you could get the same effect from using a very large glass container. Maybe even a really big glass vase (you'll just want to put some kind of lid on it). The key to the recipe is just letting the sun activate the acid in the lemon juice. Like I said above, it's not the same if you try to make it in the fridge, or on the edge of a window sill inside. It's the Magick of the Sun that makes it what it really it!

Thanks Katherined for the link. I'll look into it and see if they have it on the Amazon UK site. Thanks also Bastette for the info.
I was thinking as well as an alternative perhaps you could add oranges or limes to it?

I have tried limes (my fiance LOVES limes), but it just isn't that same. Though, that's just me. I like limeade, but it's not my favorite.
