"90 % of the energy output of the brain is used in relating the physical body to gravity. Only 10% of the brain's energy output has to do with thinking, metabolism, and healing"
-Dr Roger Sperry, 1980 nobel prize recipient for brain research.
Did you know?
for every inch the head sits forward in relation to the shoulders and lower neck the weight upon the cervical spine is increased by the entire weight of the head? (average weight of the human head = 16 lbs, 32 at 1 inch anterior to the shoulders, and 48 lbs at 2 inches)
Wolffs law states that bone will remodel its self under stress to better withstand the forces placed upon it. This is why weight bearing exercise increases bone density and is important for people with osteoporosis or low estrogen levels as in menopause. It can also be a factor in disease as abnormal forces placed upon the spine may lead to a deformity in the vertebrae.
(So if you're planning on breaking a tennis players arm, you can rest assured that you will have an easier time breaking the Non-Dominant arm )
Posture is easily as important as eating a balanced diet, exercising, getting a good nights sleep or avoiding harmful substances such as tobacco or drug abuse. I will continue to update this information until I feel it offers a clear understanding of the consequences of poor posture, and the great benefits of a balanced posture. I believe it is a far too often overlooked and discarded in light of other health concerns and I would like to help you understand why it is essential for all aspects of your health and well being.
Thank you for reading, and your patience as I compile this article for you.

I immediately started sitting up much straighter upon reading this post. I need to remind myself to have better posture especially while I am at this computer!

Mathew I love your posts! My Mom was forever telling me to sit up straight! You often hear about the importance of good posture but never really WHY it is so important. You have made this very clear, thank you!

I also had to sit up, back straight. Easy for the mind to wander the body into a slouched posture. Thanks for the reminder Mathew.

So, where's the why? I'm confused now ... I really would like to know the rest if there's more. I'm not trying to be pushy, of course not, but ...
Knowledge is the best source of protection available. Prevention is the best medicine ... you name a few more. LOL
I'm going to wear a yard stick under my shirt for a bit ... until I remember all those spine pokes from dearest Mum to sit up straight. LOL Owch.

I'm just busy and haven't had the time! Sorry guys.
I'll write it properly soon but here it is in a nut shell.
PS: I'm really tired so brace yourself for a chaotic rant before i pass out!
You are only as young as your spine, it's the communication network that gives communication between YOU and your body. The body is designed for transporting all kinds of things all of which are inhibited if your posture suffers. Your breath will become shorter which will deplete your cells of oxygen making you age (and die) faster. Tissue doesn't heal or respond as well without oxygen eventually turning a semi gray color, and nerves freak out. Blood is another important factor here. Nutrients are carried in blood through out the body by the portal vein from the liver. If your posture is poor you will start to impinge upon the pathways that offer passage of these so very important nutrients. For instance your axillary artery may be compressed between your clavicle and first rib if your shoulders slump forward. This will begin starving the tissues of the arms of nutrients and oxygen. So in the long run it doesn't matter what you eat if your body can not bring the "GOOD" in your diet to the cells and tissue that require nurturing. Lack of oxygen causes aging, wrinkles, stress, fatigue, sickness, disease etc, etc.. which can cause adrenal fatigue in the long run as your body becomes worn out in trying to correct these vital balances for prolonged periods of time. The brain feeds off glucose (Sugar) and oxygen and will begin to lose function if it is not granted the required nutrients. learning, thinking, memory and healing will all start to slow down! Many of the elderly that we assume are daft with old age are really just starved of oxygen! Another symptom is pain! which stops the body from falling into a deep sleep! and sleep is one of the few times that the body produces growth hormone! IT IS ALSO WHEN OUR MIND RESETS! STORING THE INFORMATION WE WILL KEEP AND TRASHING THE IRRELEVANT STUFF WE WONT!!! if we don't process it properly it all starts to go! That's why our memory is so shocking when we are tired! WE HAVE TOO MUCH INPUT AND NO TIME TO FILE IT! Slumping forward is the passage to death while standing tall and blooming like a flower is the brilliance of life!
In a nut shell

Thanks for straightening me up, again. Every time I see your name on the board I think to myself, "come on, sit up." So please, continue to post. It helps me out a lot.

LOL. I thought I was just daft, turns out it might be from my utterly poor posture. I will be growing to the golden years with grace... sit up!
Thank you again kind sir. To go along with the good diet and exercise, will be the constant reminder of ... not starving myself of oxygen.
