I'm a complete newbie when it comes to aromatherapy and have recently started researching the subject and blending oils for my own personal use.

So far i have only bought oils that i require for certain healing blends but I have been amazed at the price of some of the more expensive oils (Neroli, Jasmine etc). I note that a number of suppliers provide these oils blended with another, often with a '5% dilution' rate (with a marked difference in price).

Please can someone provide me with a bit more info on what this means? Are they advisable to use as a substitute to the pure oil? Do you have to increase the amount used? Or am I just being miserly by baulking at the price?!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They are selling an oil that is 5% essential oil, 95% carrier oil. Many oils can be used as a carrier oil, really any light oil that has little or no fragrance would work, as long as it is a plant based oil and not like mineral oil that is petroleum based. It isn't a good idea to use pure essential oils on your skin, many can cause problems. Check what they're using as a carrier oil, and make sure they're using an essential oil, and not one with imitation fragrances, and they should be ok for use on you. There's a company I love that sells "Perfume oil" which is essential oil blends in a carrier oil. I love their products, and use their oils as perfume. I would hesitate to use them for magickal purposes either, because I know the oils are pure. I respect their ethics. They also sell incense made from these blends and pure essential oils. The name of the company is Airs International. Here's the website.

If you are looking at doing your own blends then using 100% pure essential oils is the best way to go. Yes some of the oils are very very expensive but also last a long time since you only use a few drops of the essential oil blended with what ever carrier oil you decide to use.

Getting started with Aromatherapy can be very expensive when investing in getting good quality oils. I would suggest if you are using them for healing blends that you try to get organic medical grade oils they are the best but also more expensive.

If you are looking at essential oils for perfume then the perfume oils are great and cheaper then pure essential oils.

Tallwoman, thats amazing as i would have thought they were selling the opposite - 95% essential oil and 5% dilute. Thank goodness I asked the experts! Thank you for the site, I will certainly look it up.

Windari, I guess the best bet is to just splash out on the 100% pure oil. If I can justify my shoe habit, I can justify an essential oil

Thank you both for your replies, they are very much appreciated especially as i am quite new to the site.

Hope you all have a great weekend
