I know a lot of people write a short dedication or blessing on the first page of their BoS and I thought it would be cool to share what we've done :) Especially if there are other ways people have started off! Variety is the spice of life :)

I'm working on scrapbooking a BoS and have just finished writing a dedication poem for it. I plan on it being an heirloom... not that I have any kids yet but you know, fortune favours the well prepared :P So here it is :)

With blithesome heart and open mind,
in this volume you will find gathered mysteries,
new and old, knowledge worth it's weight in gold.
Written here by my fair hand,
with good intentions I have planned
to pass this lore on down to you,
friends and strangers all to view.
May the effort I have taken
in these pages cause to waken,
in all who read them, understanding.
Let them feel their mind expanding.
By Earth and Water, Fire and Air,
Lord and Lady hear my prayer;
what is written on these pages,
let them stand the weight of ages.

My first page is more a title page with the dedication page as the second. I haven't written it yet, I'm leaving it blank for reasons of my own choosing for now. The Title page merely reads
Crossroads' Book of Shadows

It then has three quotes, one I wrote myself which includes the day I first began my BoS which is woefully recent, I wanted to make sure I had proper knowledge before I began the Book. Not wanting to rush in and what not.

Formally started this day, ______, but the journey started a long time ago.

Then simply...

"An' it harm none, do what ye will."

And

"Blessed Be"

I also have a picture of a rather beautiful pentacle I found.

I really like that, I know it's very common for people to feel they are coming home to Wicca, myself included, and that statement fits very well :)

Thanks, that's what I was getting at with the line. Glad it makes sense for more than just me :)

On the very first page, of my very first BoS, I had the following Gnostic Culdee Verse:

"out of a timeless world, shadows fall upon time,
from a beauty older than earth,
a ladder the soul may climb.
I climb by Fionn's Stair
to a whiteness older than time"

These days I don't keep a handwritten BoS, but in my last one, I also included a charm/curse warning people of consequences if they read any of the information within without my permission. I started doing this both for my protection, but more importantly for the protection of others - as I started writing about the how's/how to's of cursing.

I wrote this after my front cover:

The creation and contents
Of this, my book
Is not meant for
All the eyes that would look.

To protect others from
The knowledge that may harm
I beseech the Lord and Lady
For their overseeing charm.

As a humble tribute
I offer my precious book
And I pray with sincerity
My heart the gods will hook.

And so I call upon Athena
And I ask with my very soul
With my craft, my life, my workings
Please help me with these goals.

This book of shadows bless
And in this simple rhyme find charm
Protect all those who see it
From coming to any harm.

Great high Goddess Athena
Patroness of crafts and art
To you this book is dedicated
As is my very heart.

So mote it be.

It needs changing now... but it fit at the time.

Wonderful Dethas! The last verse is especially poignant :)

A very sensible attitude!

I have yet to do that part...I would love to write my own but I am rubbish at stuff like that. So I'll probably end up finding something online for it. XD

Ooh, some very lovely opening blessings, My first bos was startes 10 years ago and I just finished it, well, all the pages are full anyway, it's never finished I suppose, I just bought a fresh new book and haven't started on it yet. The blessing for my first book is one I copied from somewhere, if anyone recognizes where I would appreciate knowing as I didn't keep track of my sources very well way back then, Now I'm careful to always credit the original author.

"May the powers of the One,
the source of all creation,
all-pervasive, eternal one,
May the Lady of the moon
and the Lord of the sun,
may the rulers of the elemental realms,
May the stars above,
and the earth below,
Bless this book
and those who use it."

Don't quote me on this as I don't own the book, but I know at least the first part sounds like the Blessing Chant on page 132 of Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner By Scott Cunningham, at least that's what I found on the internet when I ran a google search. There are differences, but it's pretty close.
http://books.google.com/books?id=U3un43fTEOcC&pg=PA132&lpg=PA132&dq=+%22May+the+powers+of+the+One,+%22&source=web&ots=7yGwcdBEJu&sig=yxcaGfH7WtuKTMExPmu0jaR9PtY&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=2&ct=result#PPA132,M1
Hope that helps, I understand your need and desire to give credit.

I don't actually have a blessing or dedication on my first page as yet. It's still very much under construction.

I have a paragraph from "Oliver Twist" on my front page so far.

Thanks Crossroads, I think you're right...I used to have that book back then...I loaned it to someone and it's been long gone, I nearly forgot about it....maybe I should get another copy for my library.
