So I've had my Grimoire/ Book of Shadows on the mind a lot lately and I've been writing a lot of content for it but the seemingly frustrating thing about it is Organization. As Witches we are ever - changing and for myself I tend to be a bit disorganized! What does this mean for the Book of Shadows? Well it means it looks like a cat thought it was catnip and went crazy thats what it means lol. I figure we can use this topic to help each other and give each other ideas on how to Organize or how We organize our Grimoires. We can give each other headings/categories in which more than one aspect can be linked under, then sub-categories, In what way do you organize your BOS etc...

Some Ideas I had were...

Organizing the Book of Shadows in 5 parts pertaining to the Elements. Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit. I also asked myself if I do this then will i have a mini outline within each, having Spells, Rituals, etc pertaining to all earthly needs within the Earth Aspect, then the same for the Air aspect and so on...

I then asked myself if I should have a separate BOS for Spirits, Beings, Ascended Masters, Demons, Angelics, etc...

So far What I have *not organized at all* is:

Dedication,
Blessing,
Naming of the Book
The Laws, Charges, Redes
Moon Cycles,
Divination which could include - Psychic Development, Tarot, Runes, Dowsing, Mediumship, Channeling, etc...
Herb Lore
Crystals, Gems, Stones,
Spiritual Entities of all forms and your experiences, perceptions of them...
Spells,
Chants,
Rituals,

Okay so I know i've missed quite a lot lol but I'd like to discuss with everyone. How do you organize your BOS? What categories and sub-categories do you have within them? Any thoughts, Ideas, Tips?

Blessed Be,

Michael

Hey, Michael,

I'm going to do a bit of unabashed promotion... I created a group on MagickaSpace called Drafting a Book of Shadows. I'm trying to post an item of interest on the first page every month, well I have for the two lowly months its been open anyways... Well, back to the topic -- this months item started out as a list of the 13 sections I've organized my BOS into -- then with some further prompting from a few of members I added a more complete table of contents. It is several 'pages' long, so I'm not going to repost the whole thing here. The list will remain on the front of the group at least through end of March (which is almost here and I don't have any idea what next months will be yet... ???) -- but I also posted it in the groups discussion area so when the intro area changes, it will be archived there.

Here's a link to the group:
http://magickaspace.ning.com/group/craf ... kofshadows

After 20 years of research and organizing, I think I finally came up with a method that works, for me at least. It has 13 areas -- for the 13 moons of the year, and in a way it is organized to work as a year long set of lessons to my path. I don't know if it will ever be used as such -- my son, while pagan, doesn't really show much interest in the witchy stuff, at least not right now (though I do sometimes catch him 'grounding' himself the way he's been taught and once last year I saw him inscribe a banishing pentagram as a ward against some outside stressers.) Back on topic -- it took me time to arrive at a system that worked for me, that is one reason I'm a big advocate of 3-ring or post-bound books -- so pages can be rearranged and sorted without losing your work when you want to add something new.

Blessed Be, DML

I actually use my BoS purely as a spell journal because I have the "basics" down....or understand the basics and have a few years under my belt (not an expert at all). I don't need to make a list of all of my meditations, or write down every single symbol I learn. I can memorize the symbols, I usually make up my spells and rituals as I go, and I have every intention of passing my "basic knowledge" to my kids (when ever I have them). However, I want the next generation to see the spells I did, and if I have a good outcome from a specific outcome, I will write down the spell in good detail. My BoS doesnt have a set structure to it except a section for more mainstream magick and another purely for Darker Magicks. Its just how I work *shrug*

I'm completely overhauling my Grimoire - it's in a dire state. It will end up being several volumes because I simply cannot commit all that I wish to commit to it into one volume.

I've been organizing my book by moons, wishing moon, dedication moon etc... and Ostara, Yule etc. So far it's just a record of what I did, how I cast my circle what spells I did and results that came to pass. I have a separate book that I add meditations to and record my findings. I keep that one in my bedroom. Also I have a BOS file on my computer that I cut, copy and paste anything of interest into a word doc and store there. My computer BOS is the most hodgepoge, because it has many things that interest me that I may have never tried whereas my real BOS is a record of what I have actually done.

Hi all, I haven't started my BOS yet, but I have a fair idea how I'm going to organise it. Here in Oz we can get just the ring from the ring binder. So I'm going to use those to bind it with so I can add and rearrange as I need to. I'll be making the covers myself, already got the fabric picked out and the matt board cut to size.

I'll end up doing several different volumes for my BOS. I'm following the path of Hedge Witch so I'm going to have a separate Herbal, which will include other plants as well as herbs, and recipies too (food as well as herbal spells).

Then there's my main BOS which will have all my rituals in it. I'll probably separate that into the different festivals of the year starting with Samhain (which is only weeks away here in Oz).

Then I have a seperate spell book. I'll separate that into different topics, eg. creativity, blessings, bindings, money, etc.

I'm keeping my list of correspondences at the moment on the computer as I'm still trying to decide how to do that one.

I'm also going to be starting a book of mirrors. I'll keep all my meditation notes, Tarot notes, and general notes I take from books and my own thoughts and stuff in. Also shall keep in there a record of spells I do, when, the atmospheric conditions and the outcome. Do I like the spell? And will I use it again?

Okay, I'm Taurus, can you tell? I like to be organised and know where everything is.

So I've been doing a lot of work on my Book of Shadows in planning on how it is to be organized and so far this is what I have:

1. Genesis: A Witches Primer – Introduction to the Book of Shadows, Intro to the Witches Path, Naming of the Book, The Laws, Redes, etc.. Times of Day; Days of the Week; Phases of the Moon; 13 Moons of the Year - Moon Names; Seasons and Sabbats; Months of the year; Zodiac Signs - Sun’s movement - Luna’s movement, Basic Correspondences (Have a book solely on Correspondences)

and that is what I have today lol tomorrow who knows it may be totally different. Theres just so much info to put in it and so many places each piece of information can fit into.
