Lately I've noticed that the practice of saying Merry Meet and Blessed Be doesn't always sound quite right. I notice that although I might write Merry Meet to a new member, I know I would never say it in real life. Blessed Be, on the other hand, I do say in real life, but only in certain situations where I really do want to convey my blessings. I'd never say it at the grocery store or the post office though. I was at a witchy store the other day and got greeted/goodbyed that way. I enjoyed it but I can't imagine doing that all day, every day in real life. I get hysterical just thinking about it How about you?

I can't remember ever using Merry Meet but I have used Blessed Be. These days it sounds too Wiccan for me to use. Many years ago, though, it was special to me. It all depends on who I'm talking to or writing to as well or the situation.

Katherined, I'm kinda new here, but I think that makes a lot of sense. I guess I thought it more of a respect issue and actually conveying my sincerity. I guess Merry Meet does make more sense when you meet someone for the first time. I'm gonna look around the boards and see what and how most posters convey this. And I think I'll close with "Blessings" from now on instead of "Blessed Be". That does seem more fitting. So.....Blessings. LOL JD

I use Blessed Be if someone says it to me. But I never say it first. I guess because I'm not used to it. I don't know if I ever will be. It just doesn't naturally come out of my mouth.

in everyday life i would not use a greeting associated with any particular religion. i think people around me would look at my like a fruit loop if i started saying "merry meet". the standard, dare i say universal greeting's do just fine and dont cause any confusion to people that haven't got a clue about wicca etc.

It just occurred to me that these greetings were meant to be used among members of a coven/circle or when you know that the other person is 'one of us'. I can just see the looks on folks' faces if ya went saying this, lol Briganta

Merry Meet has never done anything for me but I do love Blessed Be. I use it to end all of my rituals and in my Book. I don't know how natural it would feel to say aloud to someone else though, admittedly.

I use it here, with my Magical friends, but not in my everyday life. It is more suitable in a coven setting. I usually end with Blessings Elia V

Hello, Merry Meet, now I'm confused a little. At first Katherined made a good point but then Briganta posted a thought that made another good point. Two contradictory points on the same subject that made great sense.
I would never say anything like that in the "world". But maybe in our paths it is traditional and a form of respect. (Remember I'm still a newbie.) And also a kind of "knowing bond" between people of like disposition.
Like when the early Christians would wear the sign of the fish or a Free Masons handshake. It may be something special.
I will have to think this all over again. Blessed Be, Blessings and Adios. LOL. JD

Merry Meet! I use it only here. I would feel uncomfortable using it in normal, everyday situations. It's too formal, and still very new, for me. However, I use it here because it makes me feel like I'm showing respect. I went back and forth on what I would use before I ever posted anything. It seemed right for me to use traditional greetings, but it is kinda stiff at times, so I don't always use it. Admittedly, it also makes me feel witchy, which is something I love to feel. Interesting topic.

I thinks it could be a good way to find out if someone is pagan? If they are not, you would get stange looks, but less than if you actually asked them if they were pagan.

I use Merry Meet within the pagan community on occasions and I believe Blue Dolphin1 makes a good point. Hiya or Greetings has always worked for me and I do use Blessed Be in my prayers ~ Our family is Lutheran, Catholic & Pagan so when Lorrie says prayers it is the standard Lutheran meal prayer, when Rita says prayers she & Daniel use the sign of the cross and I use whichever prayer they chose and they always close with Amen & I close with Blessed Be. In writing I close most things with Blessings or I'm sending love, thoughts & rainbows your way ~ it is an honor to bless someone and to be blessed and brings smiles ~ that's why "Brightest of Blessings" is in my sig tag
MANY Blessings Silver Firelite

I've never used Merry Meet. It never fit well with me. However, I do use Blessed Be sometimes, with other witchy friends.

I never use either of the two terms. As others have said, Merry meet? who actually walks up and says that to someone? It sound a bit rediculous. And as far as Blessed Be is concerned, I notice a lot of people use it in closing when they write a letter or an email or something like that and I don't find that to be an appropriate way to use it, atleast for me. I usually just sign things "blessings". And when I pray I usually end my prayers with "Always a blessing"
So yeah, that's my two cents on that.

Merry meet
I use 'Merry Meet' as an opening greeting with like minded people including those at Magicka. For me it suggests that it is good to 'meet' with someone who follows a pagan path.
It feels right for me to open my posts with 'Merry meet' and comes naturally when meeting with pagan people but I don't use it with non pagan people except at Samhain & Beltain.
I like to close with BB (short for blessed be) again because it just feels right and as a way of saying 'be blessed', like I wish you to have some good luck or good things to happen.
Those are my thoughts
BB Charlie
